Graduate Fashion Week seeks the next McQueen

British fashion’s newest and most exciting designers will showcase their talent at Graduate Fashion Week from this Sunday.More than a thousand students from 48 universities across Britain will compete for the thumbs-up from Victoria Beckham, the US Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey and Lanvin artistic director Alber Elbaz to win the coveted River Island Gold Award and its £20,000 prize to launch a career.The event in Battersea Park, which runs until Wednesday, will play host to the world’s fashion buyers and press all hoping to spot the next Giles Deacon or Alexander McQueen.But here’s an exclusive look at a handful of the strongest contenders likely to become next year’s household names.

A collection designed for Topshop inspired by the film Mrs Henderson Presents. By delving into the world of Mrs Henderson, an eccentric widow who decided to use her inheritance to open the first burlesque theatre in England in memory of her deceased son, a collection evolved which fused the youth and spirit of the 1930's with the elegance and eccentricity of Mrs Henderson herself.

A sample of my work entitled Hidden India here's the description:- "Aimed at the ready to wear market this collection is inspired by the true identity of modern India. Looking at the works of Asha Sarabhai and the Jantar Mantar observatory garments are classically cut but at the forefront of fashion in silhouette using creative pleats, Laser cutting, digital printing and and stitchwork. Drawing from festivals such as Jali and the city of Rajastan the collection is full of jewelled colour including cerises, amethyst, ruby reds and emerald greens. Using luxurious fabrics such as silk, chiffons, organzas and lush nappa and hide leathers the collection encompasses the exquisiteness and sensuousness that is present in the depths of India."

Did you know that the fashion industry is one of the worst poluters and exploiters of the worlds resources and i'm not just talking about the fabric it goes far deeper than that. I once read an article in 10 magazine regarding the actual price of a T-shirt and it was incredibly interesting. The difference between a fake and a real label goes far deeper than its authenticity it also relates to fair practice, the real value of the label being devalued, slave labour a whole number if issues. I've never been one to harp on about making the world a better place but i do think that its time that we took a reality check about where we want the industry to go.

As a result of this i embarked on creating a range in my second year (when we still had the liberty to explore!) investigating ethical fabrics but creating a collection that was not only sustainable but incredibly wearable, fashionforward and above all desirable using fairtrade,organic and ethically produced fabrics including silks,denims,cottons,jerseys and wools. These are the mood board and illustrations from the collection. Inspired by the works of the Brothers Grimm,Victorian Workhouses and the Indigo Trail in Africa the result was a collection enriched with movement and elegance aimed at high End Highstreet.

Here is a range that were designed and executed in my second year as part of a team. The collection was based on the fictional character that is Victor Forking, a youth who was a downtroden nobody who was blessed by the Great Gipsy Rose to rise and become the hottest young thing in town. all pictures copyright of yoyomofo.com
